The app will offer both streaming and offline modes. Later this summer Valve will release its Steam Video application for Apple iOS and Google Android platforms, making movies, TV shows and other content acquired through Steam available on mobile platforms. Most likely not, of course, and for that reason the app will support Steam Controllers, MFI controllers and other devices across platforms to make PC/Mac games enjoyably playable on TVs and mobiles. Of course, a big question is whether touch controls of smartphones and tablets will be comfortable enough for games designed for keyboards and mice. The Steam Link app will be released on on May 21.Īt present, streaming a Steam game to a TV requires a stand-alone Steam Link STB to act as a receiver, so the app will eliminate any need for the device for TVs connected to Apple TV and Android TV STBs.

Separately, Valve plans to make Steam Video app available for Android and iOS to enable playback of media acquired on Steam on mobile devices. In my testing playing games like Magic the Gathering is great, although I wish that particular game had better controller support. But I like the convenience of wifi, so I’m happy to live with a very slight delay and a sometimes low res image. I imagine it would be faster and more stable if I had a wired connection. Its not as slick as sitting at your PC because the game stream has to travel over your home network. Obviously this only works if you have a TV in your room hooked up to an Apple TV, and you probably want to have an Xbox controller paired to your Apple TV also. I can just flip on Apple TV, open the Steam link app and start playing in my room. So now with Steam link I don’t need to worry about having another PC in my room if I want to play a game away from my normal gaming PC. Any serious PC gamer would likely have had some kind of Steam experience. They have their own devices that let you play those games remotely as well. It’s quite convenient to find so many games in one place for pretty good prices. If your not sure what Steam is, it’s basically a platform that allows you to buy PC games, download and manage them.
